The Merengue

Name of Dance:Merengue
Origin: The merengue originated on the Island of Hispaniola (now the nations of Haiti and the Dominican Republic) in the West Indies. Legend has it that it began when a popular leader or war hero broke his leg, but tried to dance at a festival anyway. Others decided to imitate his limping steps so he would not feel out of place.
Meter:4/4
Count:Quick Quick Quick Quick
Styling Notes: The merengue was once characterized by a limping step in 4/4 timing. Now it is done with accent on one hip (right hip for leader and left hip for counterpart).
